During my stay abroad in Scotland as part of an Erasmus program, I participated in a design contest organised by Penguin Random House, the world famous publisher of paperback books. This contest is called the ‘Student Design Award’ and consists out of thee categories. I participated in the ‘Adult Fiction Cover Award’ and had to design a new cover for the classic story of “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
In this illustrtion the mocking bird, who is trapped inside a cage, represents the man who is falsely accused of the crime. He is literally stuck between life and death until his innocence is proven. My cover design was shortlisted together with nine other finalists out of the 900 submissions. My design was given the title “highly commended”.
